About

Maya Stewart is an artist based in Memphis, Tennessee. Her work, primarily in painting and sculpture, explores the psychological process of meaning-making and the complexities of identity and emotion. Her life as a Chinese adoptee living in rural Tennessee, growing up in an Evangelical school environment, experiencing travel as a luxury, and her own healing journey deeply inform her work.

In the Fall of 2023, Stewart worked as a curator, project manager, painter, and designer for a mural with her Senior Project group at Tipton-Rosemark Academy. The mural depicted various activities the school offered. In the Summer of 2025, Stewart had the opportunity to redesign and restore the deteriorating mural alongside another member of her initial Senior Project group. She designed and executed a new mural, managing the project and coordinating with her partner to create a piece that more authentically reflected the school’s culture and values.

Stewart is currently finishing her undergraduate degree at Austin Peay State University and will graduate in Spring 2027.
